Help! Temp gauge acting strange on '97 Cabrio with 2.8
On way home last nite with air temp about 35, I noticed the temp gauge wasn't reading anything, but electric fans weren't running. When I got home, checked anti-freeze resevoir and OK, so turned off motor for minute and restarted. Temp gauge started to moved to 1/4 to 1/2 area and fans kicked on while running in driveway. Is this a problem due to gauge, sticking thermostat or what? New to Audi's, so any help appreciated.

On the driver side of the engine, just below the valve cover, there..
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/12414/tempdrain.jpg"></center><p>is a black pipe that runs to the back of the engine. This pipe carries coolant to the heads.
Look at the bend at the rear driver side. There is a temperature sender mounted in the pipe. You might want to make sure that connector is clean. Maybe shoot some WD40 on it.
The picture below might help. The fuzzy round thing in the center is the cooling pipe vent screw. The temperature sender is next to it on the outboard side (right in the picture). The top piece of plastic is off the engine for this picture. You don't need to remove it. This picture is looking back at the firewall. To the left is the back of the spark plug injector bank, right is the back end of the driver side valve cover.
Let us know if you keep having problems and let us know if this fixes it.

Re: I hope that's right, I have a 97 A6 sedan with a 2.8 12 valve.
