One for MikTip..
4th gear is also an overdrive ratio which together with the direct drive, results in improved mechanical efficiency.
In reverse, 1st, 2nd and part of 3rd, the engine torque is transmitted hydraulically through the torque converter via the turbine shaft to the transmission. The power flow of the planetary gear set will be through a set of 3 internal clutch sets, K1, K2, or K3, depending on the gear selected.
At higher speeds & lower engine loads, the power flow in 3rd gear will change. Internal cluth K3
will be applied & the power flow to the planetary gear set will be mechanically direct via the impeller shaft.
The power flow in 4th gear is always direct through clutch K3 via the impeller shaft
K1 & K2 are always used for reverse, 1st, 2nd and part of 3rd depending on vehicle speed & engine load.
Your other problem, is its all controlled by the transmissions computer, unless you loose electrical power in which you only have 1st, 3rd & reverse.
Sounds like your transmission is acting up?
What its fluid level?
Or you have an "early" series 097. They were known to be more agressive with shifts.
Their are over 24 variations of the 097 through out the world.
