Default One for MikTip..

Now you've pulled your auto. tranny, can you tell me if the controlwire for the lockup function is accessible outside the transmission? I think the shift pattern is poor between 3rd and 4th gears (shifts from 3rd, to 3rd lockup, to 4th lockup), and would be improved if the lockup feature could be switched out until the tranny was in 4th. Any thoughts??

1993 2.3 80E (I-5), 4-speed automatic with 'sport' button. By "lockup" I mean when the torque converter is electrically locked (no slippage). Other makes of auto tranny get into 4th before this lockup becomes effective, but mine always goes from normal 3rd to lockup 3rd to lockup 4th. On changedown it does much the same but in reverse. I'm told this is 'normal' for the Audi 4-speed box?? The change from 'lockup' 3rd to 'lockup' 4th is harsher because there is no slip in the torque converter to cushion the change. Tks for your interest.

Default The 097 4-speed automatic transmission has a........

"direct drive power flow" that bypasses the torque converter in 4th gear, & sometimes in 3d.
4th gear is also an overdrive ratio which together with the direct drive, results in improved mechanical efficiency.

In reverse, 1st, 2nd and part of 3rd, the engine torque is transmitted hydraulically through the torque converter via the turbine shaft to the transmission. The power flow of the planetary gear set will be through a set of 3 internal clutch sets, K1, K2, or K3, depending on the gear selected.

At higher speeds & lower engine loads, the power flow in 3rd gear will change. Internal cluth K3
will be applied & the power flow to the planetary gear set will be mechanically direct via the impeller shaft.

The power flow in 4th gear is always direct through clutch K3 via the impeller shaft

K1 & K2 are always used for reverse, 1st, 2nd and part of 3rd depending on vehicle speed & engine load.

Your other problem, is its all controlled by the transmissions computer, unless you loose electrical power in which you only have 1st, 3rd & reverse.

Sounds like your transmission is acting up?

What its fluid level?

Thanks for that - best explanation I've come across. Tranny has been serviced by specialists who dropped pan, cleaned filters etc. Fluid level OK. Audi agent has also checked fault memory - "0 fault detected" I'll find another similar car to try, because Audi agent reckoned it 'drove normally'. I bought car ('as-new' and known to be not thrashed) at 34,000 miles last year, now 46,000 miles, and shift pattern has never varied in this time. Thanks again for your help.

It may simply be the computers programming for your given geographic location.

Or you have an "early" series 097. They were known to be more agressive with shifts.

Their are over 24 variations of the 097 through out the world.

That sounds like the normal harsh shift program of a 097 ! Lock-up torque converter in 3rd, then4th

Default Thanks, guys...

your comments describe what I experience on upshifts, so I'm happy with that. On downshifts from 4th to 3rd at any throttle setting but steady speed, I get three distinct shifts, which from the rev. counter I'd describe as (very approximately): 4th locked @ 3000rpm, then 4,000rpm; then 3,700rpm, then 3rd unlocked @4,200rpm. Whole sequence takes 1 - 2 seconds. Same when decelerating on light throttle. Did/do your 097s do this?? Car was sold new in Japan late 1993, now in New Zealand.
