Default Poll: Automatic longevity

How durable are Audi's automatics?

How long did everyone go before a rebuild/failure?

Thanks

Suprisingly, Audi slush-boxes are durable and with proper usage & maintenance will easily last 100K+ miles without any problems.
I am the original owner of my 85 5KS with 3 spd auto and I ended up replacing the original tranny after 13 years and 172K miles.

I have just bought Audi 100 avant with 144k on the clock and the box is fine. Had to change the rear crankshaft seal though.

Default The old ones are pretty iffy

Considering that an Audi clutch could last 250K, the Automatics were realatively short-lived. The worst (but not abused) went at 75K, most around 125K, and well maintained ones a bit longer than that. I do personally know people who had the runaway car syndrome. The simple remedy was to shut the car off and have it towed home. Jiffy-Lube type places also have a habit of not filling the front diff section, gear oil instead of ATF, causing almost instant failure.

By 1992 they started getting much better and much more reliable. However, I am still afraid of tiptronics because they cost $9K, not including labor, to replace.

I don't know anyone who's had the "runaway syndrome", but once in a while, after not driving my 86 5ks auto for a stretch, upon starting, the car will lurch forward a couple inches, in park mind you.....
Always done that throughout the 65k I've put on it; with the old box and the rebuilt unit.

I have also had a failing ISV cause unwanted acceleration in my 200q, now that's fun....

Default My failed ISV tried to give me whiplash

It got stuck wide open when I floored it one day. When the throttle was at idle, the engine would rev from 1200 to 1800 and back violently. It was the decel fuel cutoff valve trying to figure out why the car was at 1800 with the idle switch closed!!!!

The runaway syndrome from the slushbox is not that it revs the car up, it just holds the throttle if the kickdown shaft siezes.

Default Not happy with automatic.

I own a 1994 90S with the auto. My transmission failed at 23,000, thank god for the vehicle was still under warranty. I bought the car early 95 from a Audi dealer with 6000 miles on it so I don't really know what went on prior to my owning it, although I saw NO sighns of abuse. I now have 83,000 miles an have had no problems at all.
