A good way to save yourself all the measurement....
...is to pull the crank and have it turned. When they turn it, the machine shop will mark the measurement on it and you can go buy the rods and mains that they mark. It's a bit extra work, but it really is simpler than trying to get an accurate measurement of a worn crank. It can be done with the engine still in the car, you need to remove the head and the oil pan, and knock the pistons out from the top of the block, which means you'll need new rings, too. For what it costs for bottom-end parts on these things, you probably are better off finding an MC engine that's been run recently and freshening it up and swapping it in. I did the bearing replacement in my Scirocco, took about 12 hours total, and I later swapped in a new motor/trans, which took about the same amount of time. I haven't yet pulled a 5-cyl motor, though I'm about to(see previous posts), so I don't know yet how much work it is.
