Its good to see the posts below regarding UrS4s and UrS6s; those older models kind of get crowded out in the new S4 Forum, and neither my office nor my home browser will support the Audi-S-Cars site (at least thats what I was told when I complained). I'd like to see more exchange of information concerning these terrific cars, especially in terms of performance modifications and diagnosing and avoiding common or significant (fuel line leaks? speeding tickets?) problems. In particular, I am interested in whether the performance improvement and engine longevity benefits (whatever they may be -heat dissipation?, lower cylinder temps and flow restrictions?) of installing an exhaust manifold are worth the price?

Hello - yeah, another 93 Ur-S4 here. I think we need our own forum, there are too many "Hey, man, who's the dude with the Black S4 at the yogurt shop today" on the regular S4 page to look through them all for anything pertinent.

Default I would not worry about the EM

It is a pretty good design. Yes, you can get more performance from an RS2 EM, but you need a lot of other mods before it makes sense. How many mods does it have now?

So far, an MTM Stage 1 chip and upgraded brakes. The chip has made a huge difference, especially going uphill at high altitude; I would think that additional engine modifications at this point probably amount to diminishing returns, especially given the amount of traffic anymore; thats not to say I won't get the bug, though. What would you recommend?

The next upgrade I would recommend is a boost controller. I have one installed in my 94 S4 (with IA chip) and the difference is amazing. Still running at the same boost levels as with the chip alone, the car is much more responsive and more fun to drive. The engine feels like a big V8. Great improvement. In fact, I know 2 guys that run the boost controller with the stock ECU. Performance between their car and mine is about the same. Given a controller can be bought for about $450, its a great upgrade.

As for the EM. I would argue with Todd and say that it is a terrible design. The 1 and 5 cylinders have to make 4(!) 90 degree turns to reach the turbo. This has the effect of burning the 1 and 5 exhaust valves should you run too lean. That said, you're probably all right with it up to the limits of the stock K24 turbo (about 21 psi).

Check out the following link for more info on the boost controller myself and several local friends installed in our S4/6 cars.

Default UrS4 forum...

I agree that the S4 forum quickly turned into the A4 forum (and we all know what that means). The best UrS4 "forum" is the S-Car discussion list on www.s-cars.org. If you don't want to be on an e-mail list, there is an archive that you can pore through. This is absolutely the best place to get good information on your car. We are downright fanatically in love with our cars, but we do not feel the need to chest-beat, brow-beat, insult others, or waste too much time and energy on "what color is best" posts.

I mostly visit a4.org during my lunch hour to help where I can, and to stay in touch with my non-S-Car-havin'-friends (like Todd W). I think it is fine for the UrS people to hang here at the Misc. forum when we need to chat. The S4 forum (despite Jason's earlier assertions to the contrary), definitely belongs to the new-S4 guys. And that's okay. We'll be fine here.

Default We may add other forums in the future....

I agree that the S4 forum is pretty much for newer S4's only. Pretty soon we'll be starting to add histroical model information and we may add forums for each model series (4000, 5000, 80/90, etc.) We'll probably make one for the UrS4/S6. This is still a few months off, but it will be coming in the near future.

Default You obviously never dealt with a 10VT

At least yours doesn't crack in half and blow all of the mounting studs off. It also doesn't have flow reversion because the wastegate is mounted right at the turbo. I would have to see stock and aftermarket 20VT EM's side by side to make a more detailed comparison, but my point was that it is not the bottleneck in his setup. There we agree.

I would argue for Eibachs and Bilstiens next. I am considering a boost controller, but I have never used one. $450 is a lot for me, I might be better off with a V1 :P . Doc didn't elaborate on the brakes, but those are important. Good tires are also important. Euro headlights or driving lights can also help a lot.

Now we enter an area of much money and frustration. RS2 Comp turbo, both manifolds, bigger exhaust, massive intercooler, 30-35psi of boost. It is really debatable which path to take if like most of us you cannot do it all at once. I do not suggest any internal work to the engine or driveline improvements with the possible but rare exception of the clutch.
