Default Re: Warning light

My car just got through some "brake cancer" treatments. I found two things that
were/could be causing my light to come on:

1. low fluid or faulty sensor in the brake fluid res (mine was snapped in half).
2. do you have the brake pad wear warning light? If so check the wires that lead into the pads themselves. Just last week I found mine to have a cut and when I'd hit a pothole the wire would short out and the light would go on.

So far the light has stayed off....

The 89 has 3 or 4 different warning lights just for brakes. This one indicates that a brake light is burned out, though it is not.

Default Have you replaced one of the bulbs recently??..(more)

Sometimes the wrong bulb wattage will make the system think a bulb is burnt out. Just a thought!!

Default So just to state what seems obvious the replacment bulb would have had too low a wattage reading...

Right? I'm just speculating.

If an open bulb sets off the sensor, current isn't flowing. A low wattage bulb will draw less current.

Sounds like it might be a corroded socket too. A little WD-40 and some "bulb twisting" action might solve the problem. Probably be a pretty ugly socket. Bad wire connection somewhere?

You know (guess?) how far out of spec the bulb has to be?

No idea about the "spec" on Audi's. I got this idea from my 928. On a 928 if you use any bulb other than a factory brake lights bulb you will "usually" get the brake light warning. Porsche set it up to read resistance (no idea how Audi set it up). If you use a non-factory bulb with the SAME wattage the base itself will have "just" enough of a differenece in resistance (compared to a factory bulb) to cause the warning light. So if you use the wrong wattage light it will most certainly be on!! PITA!!

I'm sure Audi didn't use this set-up (no need to make the system that exact) but I would think that an incorrect wattage "may" cause something similar. Don't know for sure....just giving rudy another place to check!!?

I also agree with one of your statements in your last post...it would be wise to check for corrosion in the sockets!!

HTH!!
