If you buy in a state that doesn't have sales tax, you have to pay when you register it in WA.

Default You will have to pay the sales tax for the area in which you are registering the car..

So 8.8% in Tacoma,

I actually wrote and asked about this section of law to the dept of revenue... but about used cars...

According to the Dept of Revenue, and time any good changes hands we owe either sales tax (if from a business to an individual) or use tax (if from person to person) even if sales tax has been paid before...

Basically double, triple, quadruple tax... basically exactly opposite of what this country was founded on... (how dare the english tax the tea twice)

Default Okay, so this brings up a question for me...

Even if I bought my car out of state, when I lived out of state, when I move to washington I have to pay sales tax on the car? How does the government distinguish?

I've already paid Oregon income tax on the money I used to purchase the car...when I have to register it up here I have to pay again???

Default unless you wait 90 or 180 days, then you dont. I forget which but...

I bought a 4runner in Oregon, and brought it up to washington. They said i had to pay tax and i said it was a gift. Long story short if you wait it out you will not have to pay the tax.

Default ...

RCW 82.12.0251: If you purchased a "private motor vehicle" in another state more than 90 days before moving here, you do not owe Washington's use tax.

There are some time line caveats on these, look up the RCWs.

RCW 82.12.035: If you paid sales tax and used the vehicle in another state, you may apply that tax against the Washington use tax you owe.

Default Even worse is why not tax all used goods? Whats the diff between a used TV and a used car?

The answer of course is that anything the government registers/licenses/controls they will tax.

Default We used such methodology to save my bro taxes on his car

South Carolina has a similar deal, taxing cars very highly for registration.

So we bought the car here, it is registered at my house in Oregon, and tagged with OR plates. It will remain as such until the tags expire at which time he will register it there, saving the sales tax and the first several years of registration tax.

Default you may have an insurance coverage gap for a few months though no?

say you get into an accident and car is totaled, but it's registered in OR. how does one explain that to corporate/state?
