Default Any thoughts on variable nozzle turbo's?

Seems like a very good idea all the benefits of a turbo without the main drawback - lag. Now I realize that something like this will be very labor intensive to implement in our cars - adapter plate & software. But it is suprising that no one has taken this path before especially since it's audi oem.
Just looking for some discussion pertaining to this type of turbo

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33742&item =2414297919</a

Default VVTs don't work in a gas engine...

...at least I haven't seen one applied yet. The EGTs are too high.

Default Aren't the Cosworth Escort's regular gas?

I did see on the cosworth website that these turbos are known to melt the cats so they might have to be run w/ a test pipe

Default Maybe they have figured it out...

...but I remember that there were issues when the EGTs got above 1300F. The problems were related to the linking mechanisms and the shafts protruding through the housing. The temps are much higher in that part of the scroll (as compared to the wastegate) so the shafts would break.

Default Re: VVTs don't work in a gas engine...

Yes they do...Just ask our FSAE team about their experimentation with a VVT turbo ;-). Although, they were working on high rpm fuel maps when it went lean, and took out a piston and a couple valves. The turbo had no heat-induced damage, despite melting a piston. Due to time and money constraints, they had to ditch the turbo program, and did some minor reworkings on the motor.

Oh, the motor was a Honda CBR600F4.

Rumor is that Mark Daddio (SCCA ProSolo) runs a VVT in his Neon
