The terms of "adding a racing chip" or "tune my ecu" are essentially one in the same. Adding a more aggressive tune is an easy way for you to get a lot of increased hp/tq. The tune is a set of instructions that controls things like boost pressure, fuel and timing etc. Installing a tune that allows for more boost (air flow), also allows for more fuel and for more aggressive timing all which contribute to greater power.
For instance just by adding the Stage 1 tune from APR, you go from 294hp/296ftlb to 357/349. Huge gains that you can feel. The is a huge increase for 500 dollars and all you have to do is have a new tune (software), digitally copied to your car which only takes minutes.
