What kind of equipment do I need to read and change code in a 2001 A8 4.2
If even possible

Link to the tool. Ross-Tech is a must have tool. There are other cheaper generic code readers etc but this it the best diagnostic tool. Runs on Windows laptop, you buy cable and it contains an encryption key that allows you to download their software, run it and the cable connects to the ODBII port just under the dash on left side.
