Gas

Re: If you cant afford premium gasoline, you shouldnt have an Audi.
This is assuming the (R+M)/2 method. Straight RON numbers will be higher.
The AFC 12v can take 89, so can the NF and NG 10v's. They all have 10:1 CR. 10:1 and under (non-turbo) should be fine with 89. 87 in a pinch if the engine has knock sensors. It should pull back timing enough.
The 10.3:1 engines, and all turbo cars should use at least 91oct.
Caveat: I've run two back-to-back tanks of 89 in the CQ with no problems (10.3:1, dual knock sensors). 92/93 just got cheap enough for me to afford again, so thats what I used yesterday.

I run 87 octane while running 14-18psi
but then I have 8:1 compression and the chip was tuned for 9.5:1 so it does not have enough timing in it anyway for me to run 91 octane. It only runs 15 deg max of adv timing during wot where I need 20-22 deg to just run 91 octane.

Yes, but your engine is special ;-) Most normal people couldn't get away with running 87 on a 1.8t (or 2.0t), or any of the other turbo engines because they'd have a higher CR.
The early 10vt motors (7.8:1 CR, single knock) may be able to get away with it, not sure since I never tried it before pulling the engine.

Well they could get away with it
but would need a chip with less timing to run 87 octane. I bet a car on the east coast could get away running 87 octane on a CA 91 octane chip, actually I know they could because it has been tested before on a CA 91 chip on east coast 87 with no ping at all.

Well, thats interesting...Just a difference in the gas formulation then? CA has higher levels of some additive (ethanol?), or something like that yes?
