Help me!!
My car developed a noisy 3rd gear at around 28,000 miles. Audi picked up most of the cost, but I got stuck with a $2,300 bill for the rest. They claimed a "chipped tooth" /damaged third and second gear (they tried blaming that on me! How could I have done that? The gears are in constant mesh!), and a bad main bearing. It took them all in all about 6 weeks to fix the transmission. First they couldn't get the part ("stuck in customs"), then they figured out they had to order a special tool they (authorized Audi dealer!) didn't have.
The first gear has been noisy since around 60,000 miles. The clutch cable is totally squeaky, too. I've got now over 120,000 on the clock and hope the tranny won't blow up. :-\
What I'm trying to say is, you can possibly go a very long time with a tranny that is noisy, but you say yours actually causes shaking...
About the leak:
Maybe your heater core is leaking? I think you may have to remove the whole dashboard to get to it.
The climate conmtrol unit:
I had the background illumination fail twice. There are little bulbs you can replace when you pull the unit. I hope the display still works?
The door locks:
You say you have a '96? Mine is a '96 and the central locking system is vacuum activated. I was lucky with this system. Later models have electric lock actuators, I believe.
Good luck!
