the full story....
Well, it finally happened. 11:00 PM last night I get a call from my son. Dad... I have a problem... I think the engine (1.8T) blew... I heard a pop...oil and smoke everywhere."
I drove to get him and saw all his friends hanging with him. Oil was everywhere...all over the engine, the hood the radiator, the ground. We waited over an hour for a flat bed and took it to VAG-Motorsports our local Audi/VW mod shop. (during the day Audi/VW dealer Tech)
Tonight we got the post mortem.. a 7" hole in the block where the connecting rod that fractured went through. (20K miles on the 2002 car)
My son (17 1/2) is doing everything not to cry.. (I would be)After all the $$ he poured into his 337 and all the hopes and plans he had for it.
I'd like to take the other guy who put the mods in...only 6 months ago.. to court. He never said they could blow the engine... I'd never win but....
The choices as we see it are:
1. Short block and return the car to stock....sell the car.
2. New/used block and aftermarket (stronger) pistons and internals and keep all the mods.
3. Complete engine/Turbo/Intercooler from a wrecked car at a salvage yard. (Least costly) take off most of the mods and sell them.
4. Hope that my Geico Mechanical Breakdown Coverage will cover this even though its been modded. (dream on)
5. Get a moped
I need a drink...

Working on vortex now.
I've located a few AWP engines all 01-02 and all about 20K miles. ranging $1500-$2000.
Here is his car page with all the mods... I think...

http://www.cardomain.com/id/bernie337</a

With that much power, I'd go the rebuild route....
Forged crank, aftermarket rods, forged pistons, main studs, etc, etc.
No sense in going through the trouble of putting in another motor and having it blow up again.

Probably going back to stock...
Sell the T3-T4 turbo, back to the ko3 and APR chip. What good is more money into the car if he can't afford future breakdowns?
He needs a daily car.. not the race car he created..although that was not the intent.

agree with your thought process... a 17 year old shouldnt have that much in a car
no offense to anyone. But that is a lot of risk and without a steady income to support it, a liability.
