Engine Capacity No Cyl x Pi X (Bore radius)^2 x Stroke length.
On a stock Audi this give about 1.7808 L or 108.67Ci
On My Car I have 20" over bore
So I have 1.8029L or 110 Ci.
Compression Ratio does not figure in.
That is only a measure of Capacity Of Closed system with Piston at BDC Vs TDC.
Trending Topics
2 items only can affect Capacity of engine.
1. Bore size. (This is by physical bore in Block)
2. Stroke Length. (This is governed by Crank throw)
Nothing todo with Pistons or Rods.
Height Of Pistion can be say 40" Higher than stock, This still has not Changed Capacity displacement of Engine.
as at BDC, it is also 40" Higher, The over all stroke is exactly the Same...
With Over bore, your compression goes up!
As you are increasing the Volume of Cylinder, But combustion Chamber remained the same volume, so you are compressing more volume into chamber.
So when you over bore, to keep the same CR, four items you can do..
1. Increase Combustion Chamber Volume.
2. Use a shorter Con Rod
3. Use or make a lower Piston.
4. Use a Thicker Head Gasket.
All Engines are measured in Swept Volume, ie Cubic Displacement.
The never include Combustion Chamber Volume.
Head Gasket Volume or even Deck Height.
But Given Displacement (BorexStroke) and CR, most other values can be calculated..
Bringing Audi to Life for Audi Fans
anyway, the chamber volume decreases, and compression goes down.
But looks like we are on the same page anyway as you summarized on your last paragraph - other than the fact I recall seeing some tech books calculating displacement with every volume inside the chamber.
Thanks for info, I'll use swept volume always from now on
