Default MAF Sensor How it works?

I was cleaning my MAF sensor the other day, it looks like a simple roung piece of plastic. how does it work, and why is it so expensive?
there have to be an easy fix for it than buying a brand new one?
anybody ever opened them and just fixed one with out buying a new one?

Default What car? Older ones use wire, new ones are thin film. Either way, the only thing you can do is

clean the elements (the wire or the surface of the thin film). Because the rest of the components compromise of differential amplifiers using bi-polar technology.
