Default Performance Exhaust Help

I have a 1999 VW passat with 165,000 miles on it. About a year ago I had the resonator taken off and 2.25" pipe put in its place to a magnaflow 14803 muffler. It sounds pretty decent but I'm looking for a lower tone.

From my research I have found that if I upgrade the piping from turbo back to 3" it will make the deeper tone. The only issue is the inlet on my muffler is 2.25"

I went to the exhaust shop that did the origional work and he said if I upgrade the pipe to 3" it won't do anything. He recommended putting on a different muffler. I guess when he wants to change the tone of a truck he changes the tip.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should do? I really like my muffler but if I have to I could part with it. I listed it on craigslist and haven't had any luck so that makes me kind of want to keep it if possible. I'm just looking for a lower and maybe a little louder tone but don't want to spend another $500. Help Please!
