Default Power loss problem - Need Help/Suggestions!

I have a 2000 A4 1.8T fwd Tiptronic

12/10/00
Installed TAP Stage 1 Chip, K&N Filter, Supersprint Exhaust. Results were fantastic......excellent power, smooth and responsive

01/05/00
Installed cone intake system from Turbo5. Great sounds, faster spool up, more responsive throttle

01/13/00 PROBLEM OCCURRED
Under full throttle at 4000-5000 RPMS, I get a sudden power loss. If I back off the throttle for a second and then jump back on it, the power is there, but again drops when the revs come back up. Under moderate acceleration, this problem does not occur.

01/16/00
Replaced stock bypass valve with Bailey valve.......Problem still present, but at slightly higher RPM

Anyone experiened a similar problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Default Boost leak?

Do you have a boost gauge? Its possible that you have a boost leak somewhere in the intake pipes.

Chack engine light on?

Default Re: Boost leak?

No boost guage, but I believe that you're right about losing pressure.

I would think that such a leak would be between the turbo and the intake manifold, but I'm not sure.

Clark.......have you had any such reports with the intake system? Is there anything in the intake setup (cone filter thru MAF sensor) that would cause this problem? I went over the intake carefully, including the mounting of the MAF sensor and everything appears to be mounted correctly and all clamps are secure.

Any other suggestions? Car only has 9K miles........anyone have problems with pressure leaks?

Default More Information about this problem

The loss of power doesn't happen when the car is cold and the weather is cold. As soon as the car gets hot, the power loss occurs. If the weather is warm, it happens at lower RPMs and lighter throttle.

Any ideas??

Default Is there something blocking the intercooler?

Maybe you picked up some debris or a rodent crawled into the space in front of the intercooler and it's blocking airflow.

Crack in one of the rubber pipes? With heat it expands and lets boost escape?

Default Did you remove the laminar flow screen off of the MAF?

It smooths out the air flow for proper registry of incoming air. Under high intake volume, the air gets very turbulent, and without the screen, it will cause the MAF to misread the amount of air (less due to tumbling) vs throttle position, causing the ECU to "detune".

Maybe something's goofy with the maf. Moderate acceleration doesn't demand as much air, hence less impact on the MAF reading.

Doubt it's a boost leak, as the K03 spools up very low, and you'd know it way before 4-5k. Boost is boost, even at moderate acceleration.

With the new drive by wires, there is a boost sensor just after the IC, and it will cause a check engine light if boost falls.
