not necessary, but it is nice.....
to not have to wait in your car all the time. i am getting a turbo timer soon simply because i hate waiting all the time now. i am probably going to go with the greddy timer since it looks stock, and fits into the dash cup holder nicely. hope that helps.

it's a convinience thing...good if you really mod your car...
As far as installing goes, there's a FAQ in the tech section if you are brave enough to take on the task. It's a relatively straightforward install.

Re: Questions on turbo timer
I've heard people say that they got theirs installed at a stereo place. Some get them done at a performance shop.
I did mine myself and I wouldn't do it again. It is a pretty direct FAQ, but I was pretty uncomfortable anyway cause I am not too technical. If I were you I'd check my local european car performance shops. After I installed mine I went to my local shop and the guy commented about my timer and said that they install them too. He said that they do that pretty cool looking glove box installation and I am almost positive that they do everything like the speedo connection, and the parking brake kill, not just the basic install. That is another reason I prefer not to do it again, cause I'd like to have all that stuff, but don't want to get back in there and mess with it.
All in all, I like the timer and it is much more convenient than sitting in my car. I am happy that I purchased it and it gives me one more reason to not allow drinks in the car, cause it is in the cupholder
