Default 2012 Q5 first impressions

So, I was driving a 2009 BMW X5D. Had the Q5 a week now, so I cannot comment on MPG or any real spirited driving as I have only 450miles. Crazy to call it dual climate, but not able to separately control the passenger / driver fan speed. On the BMW heated/ac seats I was able to direct more/less heat/a-c to the seat bottom or back of seat. No such option on the Audi. Because the windshield washer quirts to the middle, lower/middle, of the windshield, the top area does not get very clean - smears. Nozzles should spray more than squirt. The gas pedal and brake seem to be closer on the Audi and I am having to learn to reposition my right foot as the way I was laying it, the left side of the foot bumps the brake while working the accelerator. Cool to have 2 trip computers. When looking t the car before buying, did not notice that the rear foot well has a big hump in the middle - awkward for middle rear passenger? BMW had had a flat floor. Still getting use to the NAV, MMI system. Don't like how the radio defaults to always on when starting engine, although I work around it by just hitting the Jukebox source button as I have not loaded anything on it yet. Also, kind of annoying that if I have the map up and turn the car off, upon restart the display always shows last destination info instead of the map. No biggie though. Annoying plastic on plastic squeak coming from the driver arm rest when slightly raised and being used. Hate the fact that the headlight washers spray ever 5th or so time. - dealer would not disable. Can't wait to get past break in period!! Attached pics are not the best due to lighting, so FWIW.

It's a different mfg - if they were the same then we wouldn't need both

*Crazy to call it dual climate, but not able to separately control the passenger / driver fan speed.
I promise it's adjustable - my side is usually on 65 and HER side is usually on 80 !
if using the left dial it can control both when "linked",
link the two by pushing the left dial in for a sec or two...
to unlink them turn the passenger side

Because the windshield washer squirts to the middle, lower/middle, of the windshield, the top area does not get very clean - smears.
Sounds like yours needs adjusting - ours cleans both front and back well

When looking at the car before buying, did not notice that the rear foot well has a big hump in the middle - awkward for middle rear passenger?
I use the other (bigger) SUV for 5+ passengers - not putting 3 of my friends in the rear of this lil car !

Also, kind of annoying that if I have the map up and turn the car off, upon restart the display always shows last destination info instead of the map.
Sounds logical if you think about it -
if you are navigating it goes to the map when we go back to the Nav from another source...
If you don't have a destination in - seems like it should start to ask where do you want to go first before it shows the map... IMHO

Wow, someone really hates his Q5

Its silly trying to compare the X5 to the Q5, the Q5 should be compare to the X3.

Actually, I love it. Someone earlier who is/ was looking at the X5 was looking for thoughts from a previous owner. As stated above, they are 2 different cars.

I don't have the temps synced, but when I adjust my temp or the passenger adjusts theirs, both fan speeds lower or increase. If I manually adjust mine, the passenger sides changed also and vice versa.

Because the windshield washer quirts to the middle, lower/middle, of the windshield, the top area does not get very clean - smears. Nozzles should spray more than squirt. agreed

The gas pedal and brake seem to be closer on the Audi and I am having to learn to reposition my right foot as the way I was laying it, the left side of the foot bumps the brake while working the accelerator. thats an audi thing. audi was almost sued into bankruptcy over this in the 90's

Cool to have 2 trip computers. yeah thats one of my favorite features, especially the one that resets for every trip within 2 hours

When looking t the car before buying, did not notice that the rear foot well has a big hump in the middle - awkward for middle rear passenger? BMW had had a flat floor. Yeah its decent sized but not too bad

Still getting use to the NAV, MMI system. Also, kind of annoying that if I have the map up and turn the car off, upon restart the display always shows last destination info instead of the map. No biggie though. I prefer BMW iDrive. the buttons are closer, the dial turns properly. I hate how the music always comes on, makes no sense to me.

ok lets try to decipher this, i'll respond inline in bold.

Now why didn't you like the X5d? I have that same motor in my 335d and love it!

Coolieman1220 - thanks for the input. Have checked w/ the dealer and they said the fan speeds are not independently adjustable. To be exact, I can adjust the fan speed manually and the temps. But, when the fan kicks in, the volume of air increases/decreases for both the passenger and driver regardless of which side was changed. Will read the manual more carefully and experiment.

I did like my X5, but it was up on lease end and wanted to try something else. My wife has a 2010 335D and that thing is some fun. Great mileage, plenty of torque and loads of speed.

ok now i understand what you mean by the fan speeds.

If you had the size of the X5, why not a Q7 tdi? ML350 Blutec (very nice) VW Touraeg. And my favorite this summer, Porsche Cayenne Diesel.

My 335d is a 2010 too! I love that car. My favorite car ever.

That is curious that they would have two fan speed ***** and it not work independently !

I guess I've not tested it either as 99.9% of the time it's on auto...

looked at the toureg diesel. Lots of options and had a nice ride and was about 10,000 less in price if I remember correctly(w/o sunroof). Wanted to go back to gas and something more fun to drive. On the Porsche couldn't wait for one to come in and I like the idea of ease to do modifying on the q5 if I want. More $ than I wanted to spend. BUT, I was at the Porsche dealer, for service on another car and they had a sold turbo cayenne, about $120,000 on the floor - was fine! Get this, in talking to the service writer he says the battery is under the driver's seat which has to be removed to replace the battery. He says about 600.00 + labor. Didn't look at the ML's and wanted smaller than the Q7. Have a friend who has a Q7 and it is nice.
