Default About to pull the trigger on Q5

Just want to run it by you guys - and "Hello!" - i'm new to the this forum (posting).

So, after fairly long process of selecting a crossover right for us, we narrowed it down to Q5 and SRX. It involved several dealers/trims/options...at the end one of the dealers who "wanted our business" but was farhthest away - came up with what we think is a fair offer: CPO "demo" 3.2 2011 p+ with navi/b&o, 7k mi for $41k (and they did offer a fair price for our trade-in)... what won me over, is that they put it in service in Sep 11, so i'm getting 5 1/2+ full warranty...

There were other "demos" but nothing came close pricewise (basically there were few 2012 2.0T basic p+ for $38.5 - we think navi/3.2/b&o for $2.5 more is a better deal)

What do you guys think?

For another $2000, you can buy a new 2.0T Q5 similarly equipped, why buy a demo that has been abused.

AUDI values the engine upgrade alone at around $2k... we liked 3.2 better than turbo. S-line accents look better, 1.5 extra warranty certainly looks better, since we intend to keep it for 6 years or so... not sure about resale value of 2.0T vs 3.2... otoh , sure it may have been abused - so there's potential for some headache (i'd assume since it is "certified" and will be warrantied for the whole period of our use - we will bear no monetary cost in case of "issues")

also dealers here (VT) are kind of reluctant to go lower than $500 below MSRP...

That’s a great price! I’d jump on it. I wouldn’t worry about the demo being “abused.” Remember, we’re talking about a Q5, not a Jeep nor a Chevy Camaro. The kind of person that test drives the Q5 is very unlikely to take it off road or even speed in it--much less abuse it. You are getting a superior value on a car that is effectively brand new and it comes with a great warranty.

I think you will be very happy with this purchase. I’ve had mine for five months now, and I am still amazed that a vehicle of this size can feel so solid, peppy, and luxurious at the same time. Every one of my passengers compliments and/or drools. Once they climb in here's a typical exchange:

"Wow... What kind of car is this?"
"It's an Audi!"

I just love saying that! Handling is fantastic; the BMW X3 doesn’t even come close. And I drove a BMW 328ci before this so I am not anti BMW. One word of caution: if you do long commutes in the Q5 be careful to set your Speed Warning at something very reasonable like 65-70. It is easy to go too fast in the Q5 and not notice it because it is so quite and comfortable at high speeds.

In my opinion, the S-line exterior package might be an upgrade, but the 3.2 certainly is not. The 3.2L has its share of problems such as carbon build up. The 6 speed transmission in the 3.2 is also inferior to the 8 speed tranny in the 2.0T.
If you are near the MA border, the dealer down here have much better prices and selection. Why settle for a demo if you dont have to.

It is a great price, I agree.. But you really wouldn't know just how the car's been test driven. It could be just like you said, or it could've been red lined when the engine was cold. When we test drove ours the salesman didn't even go with us. We didn't abuse it, and I waited till the engine was warm before pushing it a bit more, but who knows what others may have tried....

It's probably not used as a demo. It's more likely a service loaner. I don't think you should worry too much about it especially given you've negotiated the warranty period to cover your expected ownership.

Do the deal and enjoy!

I think you’re worrying needlessly—and suggesting that the OP do likewise. I refer to my earlier statement. Think about the audience for the Q5. It’s not a high school kid looking for a joy ride. In all probability it is someone in 35-55 looking for a luxury crossover. That is not the demographic to red line an engine in cold weather. I had a 24 hour test drive before I purchased mine (though I ended up buying from a different dealer) and had I been a tween I might have done some crazy things with the car, but I am not and I didn’t. I would wager that few if any Q5 buyers would test drive it and drive it HARD. Even if they did a) the car IS meant to perform and b) it does come with a substantial warranty. If it could save me 10k-15k off the price I would have no qualms about buying a demo Q5 with 5-6k miles.

I'm assuming the 41K is pre TT&L. Dunno where you're getting 10~15K off the price since a new one according to Zag would only be another $6120 (that's including the $475 for color). If financing, wouldn't make that much of a difference to they payments. To each his own but no way would I touch it. I fall in your demo age and I always put a car through it's paces when I test drive one. You should have seen the sales guy look when we returned to the MB dealership after I test drove an SLK.

I would think if it was a test drive then maybe not so bad but that seems like a lot miles for just test drives. A service car is probably treated just as badly as a Hertz rental. The loaners I've had so far have been obviously beaten on and they weren't all that old.

It also sounded like people were getting better deals on 3.2s since most people have been going after the 2.0. Did you check with any of the high volume dealers for pricing?

I agree, when people test drive a performance SUV, they want to test out the performance. Demo cars are the worst, most dealers dont even put the right octane gas in there. Imagine a car being beat on before it is warm up day after day, I would never take that risk just to save $2000, especially if you plan to keep the car for a long time.
