Default Extremely poor MPG

Hi Guys, I have a brand new 2.0T and I have only been getting roughly 12-13mpg.

I do live in the snow covered Northeast so I know the cold weather will lower fuel economy, and I do only city driving. However, I don't think these factors will lower my fuel economy from roughly 20 to 12-13. Does this seem extremely low to you guys?

Thanks.

if you do mostly short trips of less than 10 miles at a time, then i'm not too surprised. you really need longer trips to get the engine to warm up.

here in sunny SoCal, i'm getting 24 mpg overall 50/50 city/hwy.

12mph is relatively low but with the weather and having the heat on, fog lights and everything else on, I think that can affect your fuel consumption. I also believe that your engine needs to be more warmed up.. Maybe others can give a more justifiable answer.

I live in the northeast too and its mostly city driving. I get around 16 to 18mpg on average. I went to AC this past weekend and was doing 60-65mph and was getting 28.5mpg and I have a 3.2!!!!

12 - 13 mpg with the Q5 2.0T is very low. My dirve city/highway is 90/10 and i can squeeze up to 19 mpg and I drive the 3.2!!!

When we had our 3.2 last year in NE, we were averaging about 13 MPG. Our biggest problem was my wife drives 2 miles to work, the car never get warm up. Your Q5 is still new, if you do the same type of driving as we do, I would expect it to go up to maybe 14.5 MPG in the winter and 15.5 in the summer once you get a few thousand miles on it.

Thanks G Man for the response. Yes, we do mainly short distances and city driving. But our car lives in a heated garage that's around 70. Shouldn't this help with the mileage because the engine doesn't have to work so hard to warm up?

Wow. You heat your garage? I love the winter time when the air coming out of the freezer is warmer than the air in the garage. Look at your temp gauge when you get to your destination on a short drive. There were a few folks here complaining about how long their's took to warm up and this was before winter. Also, how are you calculating your mpg? The computer is notorious for being off a few mpg in Audi's favor.

No, my car gets to a normal temperature pretty quickly.

I calculate my MPG using the mileage indicator.

I know many people here calculate their own MPG, myself included, so I thought I'd let anyone with an iPhone/iPod Touch know of a pretty cool app that tracks all of that for you. It's called Gas Cubby, and there's a free version as well as a paid version. I use the paid version, and couldn't recommend it any more highly. It's great to be able to look back over my MPGs since I've had the Q5 either in graph form, or as a list that also shows how much was spent on gas at each fill-up along with gallons used.
