Default 3.2L Induction cleaning service - prevent carbon buildup?

During my 25k service, my Audi dealer mentioned they offer an induction cleaning service for $200. According to them, this is preventative service that should be done every 25k to alleviate carbon build up.

Anyone know if this would actually be effective? How much would a carbon cleanup cost if out of warranty (assuming the special tool is used that I've read about here)?

Just so we know ... what year is your Q5, and which engine?

His garage says 2010 Q5. Only the 3.2 was offered that year.

Snake oil. I'd take them up on the offer if they'd be willing to extend the powertrain warranty as it related to carbon build-up to 100k mi. They won't bite. Ask them to specifically explain the beneift of "induction cleaning" on a DI engine. Find another dealer.

I'd ask them why it wasn't part of Audi Care(?) At least ask them what it entails, and get back to us ...

Holy rip-off Batman! What a scam. Post the dealer's name and city so we can all give a wide berth.

Thanks all for the responses. It's a 3.2, which I know has carbon buildup issues.

I'll find out more what it entails before I complain about the dealership, they've been pretty good for service so far.

These do work but no on engines that are direct injection.

Induction cleaning *will* clean the induction. The carbon buildup that is problematic to these engines, however, is the secondary exhaust ports. An induction cleaning won't do diddly squat for that.

Do it if you want. I don't feel as strongly against it as some. It won't hurt anything.

There are numerous induction cleaning services that work wonders. BG offers a service that adds a spray nozzle in the intake tract to physically spray cleaners in the intake manifold, and on the backs of the valves. It works great, and offers noticeable improvements in reducing carbon buildup.

We offer the service as well to our customers, and definitely helps to cure misfire issues that plague cars with carbon buildup.
