SQ5 winter tires: Blizzak Lm-60 or DM-V1
"The first 55% of the Blizzak DM-V1 tread depth features the Multicell Z Compound while the remaining 45% features a standard winter tire compound. When the Blizzak DM-V1 is approximately 50 percent worn, a depth indicator molded into the tread design lets the driver know that the remaining tread is reaching the end of its ability to provide beneficial snow traction"
vs.
"Since the current Multicell tread compounds used on Blizzak winter / snow tires are not designed to support H-speed ratings, the Blizzak LM-60 uses a high silica content winter / snow tread compound molded into a directional tread design that features independent tread blocks with 3-D zigzag sipes to disperse water away from the tire's contact patch, further enhancing grip."
Our DM-V1s are on their 3rd winter this year and I expect they will have worn through the "Multicell Z Compound" by next spring (w/roughly 35,000kms on them). At that point, I guess we'll run them in the summer until they are further worn out as it would seem stupid to toss a tire that's only 55% worn.
The DM-V1 is not meant for performance so I ruled that one out quickly. Then the Pirellis debate came down to the fact that Scorpion Winter is the newer, replacement of sorts to the Ice and Snow. The Ice and Snow have great reviews, but I went with what is newer and also the Scorpion Winter is approved by Porsche for Cayenne, although they are not badged N-spec.
So I'm now running Pirelli Scorpion Winter in 255/50/19 and so far on frozen dry roads they have excellent grip and turn-in response. The ride may have actually stiffened a slight amount compared to my 20" Goodyears but it's hard to tell. I felt the sidewalls prior to install and they were more stiff than I expected so the bump translation may be real. It seems these are made for performance which is what I was looking for.
Make sure you check out tirerack, even with the high cost of shipping to Calgary, we couldn't find a better price on wheels + tires anywhere locally. Save us ~$1,000.
We had a set of the Pirelli Scorpions on a previous SUV and they wore out surprisingly fast and tires were no better than all-seasons the last 60% of tread depth . Those were very early Scorpions though (~2005) , perhaps they've been improved since then.
I just installed the new Dunlop WinterSport 4D on my RS4 and they're my favorite. I've owned the 2D and two sets of 3D, but these 4Ds are easily the best. What a great tire! Soft ride, didn't turn my car into a mush-mobile, dead quiet, and grip like claws on snow and ice.
