09 q7 3.6 ECU? wont stay running more than 1 min
events leading me to here...
-car ran perfect until Saturday night in rain storm I went into a
store and came out and it would not even turn over. After ten
attempts of turning key it started and I drove home fine.
-sunday I checked voltage of battery and was fine. I load tested and it
check fine. drove vehicle and same thing happened as night before.
-charged the battery all night to be safe and drove on Monday without
turning car off for about 2 hours. shut car off and same thing
happened would not turn over. Called my mechanic and he suggested
getting a 644 relay to replace 614 relay.
-still raining I picked up this relay and headed home again. Car
stalled on highway. Car started again and I made it to a highway gas
station and it stalled again and would not turn over. called for a
ride home.
-still raining I went back to see if car would start and it did so
drove it home say 50km without a problem.
-car is in my garage. I checked for water to ecu and ecu box was wet on top
but just from heavy rain not swimming in water or anything. Replaced the 614 for
644 relay on drivers side.
-car starts but now shuts down after a minute and I get esp fault beep
then headlight range control defective then gearbox malfunction
message and then the rad fan goes on really loudly
I believe this may be a bad ecu. what's your take on this?
Thanks in advance

Same problem with my 2008 Audi Q7 3.6l
Did anyone happen to figure out what was going on here ? I am having the same issues exactly the same codes and messages as well I am so stumped.. I went threw this once befor with my old Q7 and I ended up replacing the ECU but I’m really trying to avoid that at all cost right now I also am not sure if that’s what is going on any input would be greatly appreciated thank you.

From reading the original post, I think the engine bay bulkhead drains have plugged up, and the trapped water damaged the ECU. I periodically inspect the bulkhead area precisely because of this design fault.

It’s been about 4 days now or driving and no problem’s have occurred again I checked the ECU and all around it no water at all in it was completely dry and looks like it’s never been messed with at all I ran a full scan with VCDS again and no fault codes now so weird I ended up making a make shift ECU bag to and covered it completely just in case I also pulled every relay and fuse in the car and cleaned all the contacts I’m praying it doesn’t come back and I dodged a bullet. Very odd though why it happened in the first place I checked the sun roof drained too and cleaned out alittle debri nothing crazy though.

And this is the time of year when all the dead leaves and little seedlings are falling off the trees. I don't park under, or anywhere close to trees, and yet I have an accumulation since I eyeballed it last, just a few weeks back. Audi puts little plastic bits at the end of the drain lines, and those can easily get clogged if you don't pay attention. Pecan trees are one of the worst aerial 'spammers' in Springtime; our pool skimmer baskets are completely full of those every day, and the wind carries them to my car as well.
You can always try the old 'drop it in a ziplocked bag of rice' trick, which sometimes works on cellphones, but it may be too late for your ECU. Drain maintenance keeps both you and the car happy.
