2008 Audi Q7 - Load her up! (my trailer and roof rack experience)
#13
Anyone tow anything substantial - like a car?
How does the Q7 handle more serious towing duty? I have the factory tow package but a car and car trailer might get near the high end of the rating.

The Q7 is rated at 5500 lbs...
and our old Touareg was rated at 7700 lbs. We had the V6 and it towed like a champ.

You were pulling 2000lbs yes, but there shouldnt be much tongue weight...
thats why it wasn't squatting... bikes put alot of the weight on the trailer axle, where its supposed to be, that setup looks nice and balanced which is optimal

Of course you need tongue/nose/pin weight... Balanced is not optimal
A balanced trailer will sway dangerously.
Generally you need about 80-100 lbs on a car.
Figures of 7 to 15 % are also fairly common but as trailer load increases these do not compute.
Check the net and you will find all sorts of formulae but all agree you need front loading of some sort.
The other problem with a balanced load is under braking. If the nose of the car dips then a balanced trailer will push the back of the car up encouraging a jacknife even with a braked trailer as it should never be set to outbrake the car.
The shorter the drawbar or the wider the trailer axle is in proportion the overall trailer length then the higher the % front load required.
On that basis, I think that a double or triple bike trailer would need a bit more than usual front load.

balanced in my mind wasn't what was conveyed in my typing...
yes tongue weight is essential... all im saying is for his setup carrying "2000 lbs" is not on the hitch, and honestly i hope the tongue weight from that trailer should not cause the Q7 to squat much at all... thats a very light setup.
That being said i have hauled not with Q7 but with Touaregs (v10 tdi with air) and they pull 7000lb+ (about 1000-1500 lbs tongue depending on which car is in the trailer) without a problem, and zero squatting (air)... and obviously with quite some power. Personally i usually stick with my 6.6l diesel to do the real pulling...

Oh yeah, I get it now.
Read it a few times over and it can appear to be saying the exact opposite. Confusing stuff this English but we are all saying the same thing.
Doesnt help trying to convert everything into pounds either. I like tons or kilos but I guess its what you grow up with. Its a US thread anyway so I gotta remember TIRES POUNDS and TONGUE.
