Default Air suspension woes....

I have an issue with the front and rear left hand side suspension dropping top lowest it can go. I believe the front left is on the bump stop and the rear possibly too.

I changed the rear left level sensor which I believed to be faulty and now if I try adaption it fails to alter the height of the left side at all and if I set the heights according to what I measure it at, it fails on the fifth block when it should do the final update and save the new settings.

If I look at monitoring block 10, I believe that shows the four corner measured heights and these seem to be accurate as it shows something like -71mm for front left and about -50mm rear left and the other two look accurate as well although still wrong.

I am beginning to think it may well be a fault with the suspension control module but I have no way of testing this other than just swapping it for a replacement.

Any further suggestions?

before you start throwing parts at it a scan would you lead you in the proper direction. see if you can go on the regional forums to find a neighbor who may scan the vehicle for faults.

iirc in "auto" setting the vehicle should sit at a height of 464mm front and 490mm rear. (measuring from center cap to fender center.

Yes, I have scanned it but it's non-conclusive as it sometimes lists a fault for one level sensor as mechanical failure imminent but I don't believe the codes it shows suggest which sensor. I have the logs on the laptop at home so I will post anything relevant later.

Someone suggested jacking it clear of the ground on all four corners not in jacking mode, then try the adaption process. I fail to see how this can work when the first thing the adaption process does is set the height to low then normal and if it fails to respond it will not complete the process.

EDIT - I realise I did mail the log to myself -

do not adapt with vehicle off the ground it will go bonkers.
system should be on level ground in automatic mode before making any adjustments.
are you out of warranty?

Yes, it's an 08 and I never take out any form of warranty and just assume I will find a way of fixing anything which crops up.

This would lead me to believe you have a leak.

gotcha... only asking because it appears you have a leak and or faulty slc. i would start there. adapting the vehicle to factory settings is quite simple but time consuming considering how far off they are.

The overtemp code only appears after I swapped out the valve body. I replaced that about two years ago so I tried the old one again to rule that out and see what changed with that fitted again. Nothing changed so I swapped back to the later one which is on again now. It seems to lose the residual pressure from the rear air reservoir when the valve block is removed so it takes a while running the comp to re-charge that and causes the overtemp warning.

I see to recall seeing something that pointed to there being a limit as to how much of a change the adaption would accept on any single corner. Suggesting you have to take it back to normal in several steps of about 20mm max at any one time. Do you know if that is correct?

that is correct. i forgot the threshold but you have to reset in increments. i did this on my first Q7 and used a yard stick and the vehicle was level in garage. it took about two hours to get close to factory. it was off at each corner by 2mm or so despite entering the appropriate settings. the system at that point would not recognize any changes under 5mm.

So I guess last increment must be at least 6mm or more so you reach the correct value in the end.
I was tempted to set mine 10mm lower anyway just try to see if it felt any better. Also, this would put the dampers in a 'new' wear area so possibly improving the damping as the damper are quite old now.
