If my ECU has failed would my steering column still unlock? I went out today and the car indicated low battery... Wow this gets more complicated. Could it just be a battery issue and not an ECU?

If the battery is the original, change the battery. I have a 2007 and had the original battery died last month - it tested fine several weeks earlier. The electronics in these cars are so sensitive that once the battery starts to go, gremlins pop up everywhere.

Crank sensor
Sounds like the crank position sensor to me. My car had the exact same symptoms which finally led to a crank/no start symptom. I limped home on 4-5 cylinders (or 8 way out of time).
I had your symptoms about a year before it finally almost left me stranded. I remember using the key a few times because the keyless start would not engage.
