Default Starting problem caused by bad EGR

I have a 4.2 Q7 that has been very reliable up till now

It has had a problem with starting which was initially diagnosed as a bad battery which was changed and then a bad starter motor which was also changed. However the problem was still there.

I was also getting white smoke on start up and coolant loss

My indy replaced the starter motor which subsequently failed again, He is now refusing to work on the car saying it has multiple faults.

The issue I have is trying to diagnose where the fault would be before investing in stripping the engine down. I called the dealer and they were saying it could be the thick end of £2000 and there may be additional issues.

Any advice and direction appreciated

What are the multiple faults? What year, how many miles?
