Q7 4.2 Engine Mounts
Guys,
I have a 2009 Q7 4.2 with 151K miles.
I have recently noticed a clunk during acceleration, dealership tells me engine mounts are worn. Can anyone tell me what all is involved in replacement, the dealer is quoting 9.5 hrs labor ($1900 for the job) !?!? I was considering whether to tackle the job myself, replaced mounts on other cars before, wanted an idea of the scale of the project.
Thanks

If they have to pull the engine at all, that is not surprising. It is a huge MF'er to pull, the whole subframe, engine and transmission come out from the bottom with a special lifting table. It requires a "driveline hoist", can't use a two-post lift as far as I am aware. I have considered building my own lifting table, as I'd like to pull the engine in my 4.2 to replace all of the leaking gaskets and seals (which are numerous). But, I haven't yet.
Some cars, you can sneak mounts out with a lift and a "lift jack" to help support things when the car is in the air. Not sure if that is the case with ours, I haven't looked that hard...

Hey mate, this job is doable from home if your handy on the tools. I recently had to change the starter motor on my 4.2 but RHD and had to remove the alternator and right side engine mount the pull out the starter but the mount itself was the easiest part.
its only held on with 1 nut on the top and 2 12mm bolt on the bottom all can be accessed from inside the engine bay and then removed by raising the engine on one side at a time with a jack underneath.
once you start looking around what needs to be done behind the wheel well It will all make sense.
buy the mounts from rockauto or somewhere and give it go yourself! Good luck
