Yeah that really makes me question the effectiveness of that reader, it sounds like it cant pull anything so you could have a ton of fault codes out of reach that will greatly help you.

If you have any local VW/Audi clubs they usually have a few guys w/cables they can loan, otherwise the cheapest VAG specific tool I've seen is the ObdEleven but I've never used it personally, had a real VAG-COM cable since ~2002ish, and a pirate copy before that.. I think you can buy a cheapass ebay cable and use VCDS it in Demo mode, it will do scans.. just nothing else.. that may have changed but thats how it used to work.
