Default Daytime Instrument Illumination

I hate that the instrument cluster in my Q7 is not illuminated during daylight hours. My Mazda CX-9 had a back lit instrument cluster, and my Corvette does. Hell, my wife's 2011 Kia Sorento SX has it too.

It can be extremely difficult to see the numbers on the speedo depending on the time of day and position of the sun. I usually switch to the digital speedo so I can tell how fast I'm going.

Is this missing from the Q, or am I missing something.

In my S5 it is when you have the headlight switch to the AUTO setting. Try that.

That doesn't work in the Q, as my lights are always in auto position.

Setup, Display, Brightness... Does that help?

On my Q the speedo is lit during the day even with the light switch off, however if you drive into a dark tunnel or something then the back lit turns off until you are back into day light.

You can VAGCOM the backlight and needles on full time if it bothers you.

I will add the needle is always illuminated--I just can't see the speedo numbers during daylight hours.

That is strange - the RS and Q5 I have are easy to read in daylight.

Audi says this is intentional to remind you to turn on your headlights. I think it is rather annoying and when I first saw it I thought something was broken, but apparently it is an intentional safety feature.

this makes ZERO sense. the instrument cluster is not lit when the lights are set in the AUTO position, as mentioned before.

"audi's" comment is counterintuitive to the purpose of the AUTO feature. Why would a dark instrument cluster remind you to turn on your lights if the car will automatically do so?

I can understand if your lights were in the OFF position, but not AUTO. My S5 and S4, and previous Q7 all had lit instruments in daytime.

This sounds like a missed feature.....
