There was this audi guy in the Phoenix area that was putting a 3.6 liter audi V8 into a urquattro.

I love my 1983 urquattro but the original 5 cylinder engine with k-jetronic leaves much to be desired. It's almost always hard to start. If it's not one sensor or connection it's another. The heat from the turbo is just too much for the cooling and air flow of the car.

Imagine a newer reliable power plant with lot's of wonderful torque ahhhhhhh heaven.

He stopped posting updates along time ago.

Does anyone know if he finished the car?

Does anyone know anyone else that has managed the same or similiar engine swap.

There was someone doing that with a black UrQ that had had intimate relations with a tree or something. I don't know how far they got. The 3.6 is not a great motor. The late 80's single-knock MC 10VT is the easiest swap, and very reliable. The 3B 20VT is a bit more involved, and a great engine until the timing chain wears out $$$$. The AAN 20VT is an awesome engine, but a PITA to swap.

Then again, UrQ's aren't great daily drivers. The constant electrical and periodical mechanical problems more or less dictate some pretty serious work to make them reliable. The MC 10VT is a pretty easy swap, and will be a lot more reliable than the rest of the car. They are also cheap and easy to find.

I know of one Audi with a Corvette motor, so I guess it just depends how involved you want to get.

He has decided to put the V8 in his '85 ur q. It will be a great car when he is finished. It will also be one of the most unique cars that you will ever find...

There is a lot of fabrication involved in the swap, much more so than putting in a later 10V or 20V engine. The motor mounts, cooling system, brake master and servo, and exhaust all have to be custom as none of the original components will fit in the engine compartment with the V8.

It doubt anyone has or will do another Audi V8 swap into an ur q. One problem is that you need the engine from a V8 with a manual transmission to mate to the transmission and there were only 75 V8 5spds brought in to the states. (The engine on the automatic cars was a bit different.) Maybe someone in Europe has tried it, but I haven't heard or seen anything.

If you want a more reliable and powerful engine for an ur q, you are much better off putting in a later MC, 3B or AAN engine.

AFAIK, the car isn't done..I've been paying close attention since I've been thinking about doing the same thing, except starting off with a straight-up 4kq, incase I get real ambitious & want to do a SportQ clone. IMHO, UrQ's are too scarce & pricey to experiment with.

Personally, I'm looking for an entire V8 donor car..pref. one with a dead AT trans. I have plans for the leftovers of the Type44...think Audi SS.

This actually turned out not to be the case.. Jeff mated an auto block to the 021 5sp. There's just a plug over the end of the crank on -some- of the auto blocks...and it's removable. It'd hardly make sense for Audi to make 2 diff. blocks. Also, since the 4.2 is the same size externally as the 3.6..that opens up some more possibilities.

C'mon guys, start wrecking those A8's!!

As I don't frequent these forums, I didn't spot this message until now ... Yes, I'm alive and well, and so is my UrQ-V8 project.

As mentioned above, for a variety of reasons, I've decided to switch gears and install the V8 into my '85 instead of the '83 that I bought with it. Work on the project is continuing but has been of the slow-but-steady variety due to other committments, both personal and professional. At the moment, I'm in the process of cleaning/restoring the engine compartment -- no point in dropping a shiny, clean engine into a dull, dirty engine compartment, right? -- and with a bit of luck, will have the engine permanently installed by next spring.

That will still leave wiring everything up, installing the cooling system, reworking the brake hydraulics, etc. but by my reckoning, this should put me over the top and my goal is to finish it up by the end of 2002. We'll see...

The Audi Dudi guy stored the car and it now is mine after his death, in April, so this car is all original and I have plenty of spare parts for the parts car Audi Dudi bought. It will be for sale and yes it runs, the interior and body - paint is MINT.
