Default Engine temp

I noticed a couple of days ago that my engine temp went up to about 230 degrees.

Is this a normal temp?

Just a little nervous.

That's normal, usually after spirited runs or long periods of stop-an-go traffic

232 is expected under heavy running, accel/decel, high revin, etc.

Default That's not the worst, but if you plan on doing any tracking I would watch for anything...

in the 250 and above range. The car may need added oil cooling. For every 15 to 18 degrees above 212 degrees oil oxidation will effective half the engine oil life, thus the recommended 5K mile intervals seem appropriate if you are getting 230 degree temps. I'd half that interval again if you decide to track or else look into additional oil cooling.

Default It also kind of depends on what the outside air temperature is around you.

People who live in California or warmer temperatures will frequently hit the 230s. I know my car is in the 200-210 range just cruising, and ive hit up to 240 under harder driving conditions.

Do you mean engine oil temp? If so, no worries. Start being concerned at 280*F+

Default Verr?ckt must be right :-) I sure hope he is!! -> I got the oil temp to 250F/122C

hm... the oil temp I see while cruising is 100-102C (212-215 F) but when breaking in with 3rd or 4th gear and upto 7000rpm it went up to 121-122 Celsius! (that's ~250 F). Again, after cruising on 6th (4K rpm) it went down (quickly) at 102 Celsius.

ext. temp reported was 15C (~60F). I can only imagine what it'll do during summer in Greece (it goes upto 40C = ~104F under .. shade)..

in summary, I don't think you have a prob (and as Verr?ckt says.. "no worries"!! till you reach ...280F ??!!!)

Just remember to go through highway cool down cycles as you break her in.

Default Here are BMW's guidelines from the 335i's motor management literature. The first warning comes on

<center><img src="http://www.nogaroblue.com/cars/BMWoiltempwarning.jpg"></center><p>
at 298 degrees.

The engine starts taking corrective action at 304 degrees. Emergency status is reached at 316 degrees.

Audi's guidelines are probably similar.

Don Istook and Champion racing will tell you not to be worried until over 275*F, and this would be a very difficult level to reach under normal circumstances.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/906461.phtml">Click</a></li></ul>
