Default Is it bad...

don't you like threads that start with is it bad? haha.

So I just swapped my friend's spare volk. Fortunately, I had a hubcentric ring spare pack to put one on his, so I didn't have to take mine off...

but...

his tires are a tiny bit taller than my newer kdws...he's at 245/35, i'm 235/35. First issue.

2nd, the rotation on the tire is for the right side of the car, and i just put this on the front left. Figure handling, wet traction etc isn't optimal, but I shouldn't have any catastrophic issues in the next 3 days while the wheel is being repaired right?

Thoughts guys? I'm kind of stuck doing this. Fortunately, I can keep my driving on the streets, at 50mph max for my commute.

Default Oh and having your own sweet jack and stands for the win!

I'm very pleased with my relatively lightweight, alum. jack from costco. It's got some "padding" of sort unlike those standard steel jacks, where the contact point won't eat the ish out of the lift points on the car. I'm very pleased.

It rolls pretty quietly, unlike those pos craftsman jacks (have on in LA)...managed to keep the noise levels down for my neighbors.

Which wheel is it going to be replacing? This is going to determine which diff will be involved. Personally I wouldn't do it on either of my cars. At the very least I would count on some fluid changes after you are done, if it replacing a rear wheel count on changing the fluid in the read end for example. I am not too familiar with AWD on these cars yet since I have only had it for 2 months, out of that it has been driven for 2 weeks.

Only my Talon that is AWD, I would say forget it. You would burn out the Viscous Coupling before the end of the first day. That would be about 1500 in parts, dropping the downpipe, crossmember and transfer case in order for me to pull my tranny to replace it, but this is a different AWD system. Like I said I am not to familiar with the S4's AWD yet.

I still wouldn't do it though.

Default front left. Where's Jet and his torsen "tolerance" levels... it's 7mm difference brand new

The spare i'm using (245) is more worn than the newer kdw...so i'm guessing the actual difference is half of that, so 3-4mm.

Default Found it: 2-3% tolerance. So...12 mm if you say 2%

I think I should be okay...but that's front to rear, not left and right on the same diff.

I know people who've done it for a couple weeks...hmm.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4b6/msgs/351341.phtml

Take a measuring tape and measure the circumference of both tires.

For me, I would still replace the fluid so you wouldn't have to worry about a lack of viscosity.

torsen. Works with worm gears not viscous fluid. Your good doing this for a while. What will happen is the open front diff will split the difference in speed no problem and your center diff will see half the difference.

Yeah, been reading. It is a Torsen III planetary type. So my question now is on the input/output configuration...the Sun/Planetary Carrier/Annulus if you will. Please advise...as I said before I am new here.

Default I have played w/ torsens before in a completly different application...

Not completely sure of what you are asking. Check out the link for pictures and info on stasis' diff. It is the same mechanicals as what is in our car with a great bias ratio.

Stasis info on there upgraded torsen

Okay, I read the info on the link you posted. Normal ratio is 2:1(also calles TBR, torque bias ratio) which would give you a 50/50 split. There are other applications of Torsen IIIs that are 3:1, which give a 75/25 split. This one is 4:1, so I can only imagine that is 100/0, all or nothing when active.
