VIN Decoder?
Thanks for all the responses to my questions about trading up from a 330xi. Next issue: I am looking at a bunch of cars on autotrader and I am trying to decode the vins so I can figure out the options/transmission types etc... does such a thing exist? (Did you guys know that there are over 65 in the tri-state area I'm in NYC so that's NY, NJ, Conn, ?Penn)
Thank you

5 ............. Engine Type (e.g. 1.8T, 2.8, etc.)
6 ............. Restraint System (e.g. Drive and Passenger Airbags)
7-8 .......... Model (e.g. A4, S4, A6, A8, etc)
9 ............. Mft Check Digit (internal code)
10 ............ Vehicle Model Year (W = 1998, started alphabetically w/D = 1983)

This is what you want to get your hands on for complete list of spec/options on a particular car; usually found in the spare-tire well. It associates most (if not all) vehicle codes with the respective VIN -- i.e., build date, drivetrain, motor, paint code(s), interior codes, options/packages, etc.

Either way is probably moot since he's looking at AutoTrader ads and trying to decipher only from info contained in them (like VIN).
