Default 2010 Audi S4 Prestige | Buying Advice

Just sold my 2007 BMW 335, and looking at a 2010 Audi S4 Prestige CPO. Its a white on red auto with 24k miles. The dealer was asking $46700, but I have gotten him down to $43400.

Any opinions on the deal? My last two cars were BMWs, but I am ready to jump back over to Audi. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Does it have sport diff? If so I think that sounds like a pretty ok deal! I just wouldn't buy an S4 without the diff.

Yes it does have the sport diff. I have not been keeping a close eye on S4 prices over the past year, so I want to be sure. Thanks.

Ha ha, $46,700 down to $43,400? Shows you the clever marketing and psychology behind high ceiling listings. Blackbook value, aka auction price, which is what a car truly is worth in the market (contrary to what many believe when they buy into the KBB or NADA or Edmunds bs) of a 2010 S4 Prestige with 24K mi on it ranges frorm $34K - $40K which means that the dealer did not offer more than $40K to the previous owner. He probably offered no more than $38K since CPO costs for a dealer are around $1500.

Retail wise, its not a bad deal at all but I would like to see less mileage for the price (16-18K.) JMO

BTW, white on red is a very very nice combination. If you like that combo, then I might jump on it. CPO isnt a bad thing eithr but you are probaly paying $1800-$2K or so for it

Thanks for the info Mark. Yeah, I did a little research via the Manheim auctions, and the car seemed to be priced around 38-40. I have been looking around, but really no other white on red cars with the Prestige package. I figured the CPO is worth it, plus I got 2.4% financing for 60 months.

I see that your S4 has the sport diff. This has it too, but does it stand up to all the hype I have been reading about?

Thanks for the help.

I do not know if the sport diff has made a difference. The only way to know is if I drive an S4 w/o a sport diff. The sport diff in the S4 enhances the quatro system by offering independent wheel traction as opposed to the entire axle (front or rear) that we have seen in the past. In theory, this radically changes things up wiht AWD. So based on the "theory", For the price I thought it was a good move. It’s a performance car so I wanted all its possible factory performance (Plus, It was a newly ordered car at invoice PRICE with a $1500 BMW-Matching Holiday credit) Perhaps others can chime in with real-life application experience (vs theory) with sport diff compared to w/o sport diff

Aside from sport diff, At the end of the day, You have to ask yourself what you may NOT like about the 2010?. Would you prefer black on black, for example? Is 24K miles too high?

As a sidenote, For 18 months I have looked 3-4 times a week for a pre-owned Ibis/white velvet beige NWB A8 and I could never find one with the 5 options I wanted. There was always something that was missing and I cant begin to tell you how many VINS I found nationally that I called AoA to find more info because the dealer didn’t list the options on their site

I would typically call AoA with 3-5 vins at a time and Most of the time, a VIN showed a pre-owned A8 w/o B&O which I must have in my car (I am a big audiophile). What hurt was the fact that AUDI makes 90% of their D4 A8’s in an “L” (Long wheel base), and after driivng a few 2011/2012 "L's", it is simply too long of a car for me. So the odds were not in my favor for a pre-owned NWB in my exact choice and I was not going to deviate from my options with such an expensive car. Finally I said if I want a D4 A8 in my exact options, I am going to have to order one . Fortunately, I got very lucky as in 2013, AUDI now offers the A8 in 3 engine flavors and the base engine has dropped its price $6500. I also found a dealer 5 hours from me wiling to sell me a newly ordered 2013 A8 at invoice (could not find anyone to order a 2012 at invoice) and AoA is adding a $3K AUDI Loyalty rebate (because of my S4)

My point is if you like the 2010 S4, I would jump on it because a WHITE/RED Prestige sounds like a unique rare configuration that will be hard to find. You could begin atleast talking to the dealer about invoice on a new car. Going in another direction may also get him to even lower the 2010 price. Just know that the 2013 S4’s have a new headlight design that some like and some don’t.

I see the CPO as a huge buying point for the 2010. Only the mileage would make it a tough call for me but again, the CPO then comes into play (mainly because of the expense to repair german cars as they age).

I don’t know about BMW but I can tell you that after reading threads for the past year on AUDI (and other car) forums, that AoA is phenomenal at making owners happy when things go wrong with their cars. AoA has really impressed me.

I'm no expert on price, but it seems good to me. As a 2010 owner, I can suggest a couple things:

1) Find out if the water pump and thermostat have been replaced. The water pump specifically was an issue for 2010 and early 2011 models. I believe both are covered by TSBs.

2) The 2010 does not have launch control. Probably not a dealbreaker, but FYI anyway...some slight differences with the 2010 transmission I guess.

3) No HD radio. I have heard that some were unhappy with the HD reception anyway, but I still would have liked to try it out. This may be a city versus suburb type of issue. Sirius did not come in well for me so I'm supplying my own tunes.

There may be some other differences between the 2010 and 2011/2012. I hope this helps. Let us know what you end up doing!

Mark,

thanks again for the information. I am really digging the Audi forum, you guys are on point. I did not get that from E90post (BMW forum).

BTW, I love the A8. I really don't see why anyone would jump to a S550 or 750L.

Thanks again.

Zulu,

I asked the Audi dealer and the water pump and thermo have not been replaced. These were recall items?

Also, the tires on the car have 5mm tread on them. That does not seem like much tread on summer tires...

Should I push the dealer to replace them?
