3,000 rpm in 6th at 80 miles an hour? What?

3,000 rpm in 6th at 80 miles an hour? What?
Read somewhere that B8 S4 sits at 3,000rpm in 6th gear at 80 miles an hour. Does that make ANY sense? Why would it be geared that way? There is so much torque after all.
My 2010 A4 sits at 2,600rpm in 6th gear with cruise control at 80 so I would expect S4 to be at 2,200 or even lower. This hardly makes for a relaxed highway cruiser, clearly they could have easily achived 30mpg if geared properly. I do way too much freeway driving, going from SF to LA on I5 at 85mph and looking at rpms well over 3,000 would be super irritating. Sigh... moving on to a different car..
