Default Radar Detector Help

Hey all,

I know absolutely nothing about radar detectors: types, legality, installation, etc. I am thinking about getting one once my S4 arrives and break that puppy in.

Does anyone have any suggestions/tips on what type or radar detector I should get? I want something with easy install (no wiring issues etc), with a price tag of around $200 max. I am in California if that helps at all in terms of the type or legal issues. Thanks so much in advance for the advice!

The only radar detector I would buy is the Valentine 1.
However, it is not $200 and it is not wireless.

It is the most amazing radar detector I have ever owned and I have owned one for the last 7 years. Worth every penny. You can hardwire it yourself or if you don't want to your local Audi dealer will do it for a "small fee".

This may not apply to you, but be aware that Side Assist interferes with many radar detectors and causes false positives. There are some workarounds to remove the false positives, but it involves disabling a particular type of radar gun detection.

My side assist doesn't interfere with my Passport 8500 x50. For reference.

IMHO, with radar detectors it is one of those purchases to either go for the best or don't go at all. I have owned the Escort Passport 8500 X50 and currently the Passport 9500i. I have some friends that go for the cheaper ones and honestly they are more of an annoyance than a help. They are not very good at discerning false alerts (automatic doors, traffic sensors, and even other detectors) from legitimate police radar.

Many people on here will tell you either go with an Escort or a Valentine 1. Both are phenomenal detectors and you really can't go wrong with either. I went with Escort because the 9500i has GPS which allows you to mark and save known speed traps and lets you permanently lockout false alerts. It is also a very "quite" detector. It does a good job at never alerting to false alerts in the first place.

The one thing I have always heard about "wireless" detectors is that as the batteries die, so does the range. Which to me is a big turn off to those types.

As far as wiring. It honestly doesn't get much more elementary than hardwiring a detector. Just slip the wire behind the trim along your windshield, down the A pilar and behind the dash and use an O ring to connect it to a fuse that turns off when your car does.

That is my two cents, you make the call for yourself.

Can anyone give more description of installation? Where do you have the detector and how do you have it wired?

+1 for the V1. The coverage and additional info is worth the extra money all day.
