Default Retrofitting backup camera and rear parking assist

In January, i ordered these parts from Kufatec:

APS advance - Complete - Audi A4 8K w/Rear Camera MMI 3G
APS Audi Parking System - Rear Retrofit - Audi A4 B8/8K

...they finally arrived the other day and im excited to get this retrofitted into my 2010 S4 with 3G MMI. Im also pleased that they are all OEM parts. Unfortunately it came with no instructions and i've spent a few months googling this. I would like to document this here to show others how to do it.
Fortunately, a note indicated that I can enable the system from inside with a VAG com cable (now i need to find one of these in Denver!) I got a note from the MFG that seems to indicate that this can be done inside the menu, another great break for me. Before they said i'd have to send the head unit to them and then they send it to their HQ in Germany. This means weeks without my MMI.... cant have that.

Anyone with any info on this at all? Tips/tricks/other threads all greatly appreciated.

Keep us posted as I considered doing the same thing. I ended up going with Nav-TV and an Alpine rear view cam. For more info, please see my build thread at AZ.

I forgot to mention that I haven't posted the update about my camera install yet. I'll do that over the weekend. See post 1 and 13 for some general info about my camera install.

Is there a way to edit my previous post? I was going to add this info but couldn't find the edit button.

You can get a VCDS (VAG COM) cable from the same place we all do, Ross-Tech:

As far as retrofitting anything, the man, the legend DavidB8 is the guy you want to contact. He usually hits up the B8 A4 boards over @ AZ and has his own website @:

yesterday i took all the parts by my local audi dealer and told them the story. they are supposed to call me back with an estimate for installation.

i'll keep the board updated, and if i have them do it, i'll take pics and good notes and post them back here.

after looking at the instruction guide, my local dealer told me anywhere from 5 to 12 hours labor with this (at $120/hour) so im going to think about it.

there are a couple things in the master computer that you have to enable to have this permanently enabled too. didnt realize it would reset if the dealer ever serviced it

Day 1: got the trunk lid apart (painful, but it just pulls out) and wired the new trunk switch/camera module in the bay to replace the old one. Pulling off the trunk lid cover is scary, but it just snaps off.
Note: Inside the trunk theres an emergency latch (to pull if you get locked in?) and its wired in. The handle comes apart and reveals a ball. This is a mess to re-do (i made that mistake). Then i realized that the whole assembly detaches from the trunk cover assembly and that is WAY easier.
There are two grey wires that im not sure of. i left them in there and emailed kufatec.
The existing wiring is all neatly wrapped in some kind of stick fuzzy tape. This is really classy and probably reduces wear and noise. i cant figure out how to get my wires inside that bundle, but oh well.

the OEM package i got has a video box that goes in the back right behind the pull out cargo net holder. this came with a black plastic holder. i cant see how it fits in there right. its very poorly positioned. it might have to sit there with only a single bold holding it. a single grey cable from the camera goes to this box. it has a green connector (and cable) and a brown one (no cable)... no idea where the green cable ends up. probably in the dash somewhere too, since pulling up panels is my arch nemesis.

Day 2: the instructions are poorly translated from german which make this even more maddening. Turns out the grey wires from yesterday need to run to the front dash. So i tackled pulling up the foot trim along the edge (also is scary doing this but it just pulls up) the worst panel by far is the one along the back right seat. it sorta bends in an awkward way and feels like its going to break. i THINK its attached at the bottom- i couldnt get it to come completely off any how. i ran only the grey set of wires to the front of the car (into the CAN assembly)

Good lord the glove compartment is a b*tch to get out! my wifes mazda is the easiest thing ive ever seen--- it was like 2 screws. the audi's is about 9 bolts and they are each in an awkward position. the last bold is behind the ipod holder, which i accidentally learned pops out too.

the CAN assembly kicked my ***. there are two pink plastic blockers. i busted the lower one trying to get it to move. i cant for the life of me figure out how to get the CAN out of its tray so that i can insert the two video wires. but thats tomorrows task.

to do:
-find out where the green cable goes.
-figure out how to open that damn CAN assembly.
-get measurements from a friends A4 bumper to drill the holes for the parking sensors.

That cloth adhesive tape is available from ECS Tuning ...

See this link for more details: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Cloth_Tape/ES10764/

I bought a roll and have used it for wiring, and have applied it in various places to eliminate rattling (e.g., the fuse panel cover). As I recall, it is made in Poland, and is worth the price ($23.35 for a 32 foot roll). You can use this to simply tape your new wiring to the outside of the existing bundle.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks for undertaking this project man, it'll be useful to learn how it's done. Did you happen to take any pictures, it'd be awesome if you were able to share some.

Thanks!
