The S4 is one of "America's Hardest-To-Get Cars"
So says this report:

One particular excerpt regarding the reasons for limited supply is worth quoting:
"One official at a German automaker said he keeps supply lines tight so that dealers don't discount the cars, thereby upholding residual values, and promoting brand and luxury value to the dealer and to customers. (It basically ensures that his cars are in "only the right driveways," he said.)"

I don't think anyone here would argue that the S4 is in short supply.
There's obviously different kinds of reasons that will put a car on this list, though, as the Audi S6 and Dodge Charger wouldn't seem to be cars that are in really high demand.

I think the article means there's very low national inventory. Anyone can order one, but most folks are not that committed. They want to drive it, then drive it home. Not possible in most markets with an S4.

You said it. After a nearly four month wait, I picked up my car last night. Wow! It has exceeded my expectations so far. Love the way it drives, love the little S4 touches (trunk lid spoiler, S4 big brakes...), love the whole design of the car, love the meteor gray color (looks even better than I remember it), can't wait for the break in miles to be done. No wonder this car is in short supply.
