7K RPM at 26.2 MPH/1K RPMs is 183 (i.e. RPM limited). Drag limited limit is around 173-175 MPH for stock IMO.

That would just about dead even line up with reports of 390hp

I don't know much about how to test the power output of an engine. I understand that measuring horsepower would yield different results based on "where" you measured it from.

Is there a particular reason why no one has measured how much horsepower the engine is developing at the crankshaft? Is that even possible? Or is it too much of a pain-in-the-***? It seems like having those results would put the speculation and attempts at calculating the engine horsepower to bed.

On a related note, I know that the butt dyno isn't quite as accurate as a "machine" dyno, but my stock B6 S4 didn't SEEM as quick as my current S4. Anyhow ...

Measuring HP at crankshaft is meaningless. It is a dick waving exercise, as it can't be done accureatly without an engine dyno. There are several more reasonable ways to measure how your car is doing. My two favorites are VAG (VCDS) 3rd gear log and Gtech RR (or Pbox) log. Some people choose to use a dyno, that is OK as long as you only looking for relative numbers, as different dynos are all over the place for same car.
