I have a 2000 S4 with the 6spd tranny. My check engine light came on and I don't own a scanner. Tried searching on the net, but found way too many choices and can't decide. So, now I'm taking it in to a local shop to check it (free to hook up and run a scan) but would like to buy my own personal scanner so I don't have to schedule an appointment next time. So what should I look for, and what won't work for my car. I've been hearing about this Vag-Com unit...but want something under $200 and I don't have a laptop...any input? Thanks in advance.

FYI Auto Zone scans/clears for free also

Thanks for the info, I called my local auto zone and other parts stores around, and they would "rent" the scanner for me...it's an "Actron" scanner and they sell it for $169...has anyone used it before?

Found another auto part store that sells one for a "european car", at $80...but he said it won't reset the check engine light, and those typically cost over $500...and they don't sell those. Now I know I can disconnect the battery for a few minutes and that should clear the light...but why go through that trouble if I can do it through a scanner...I know there has to be a way...help!

If you bring the car to AutoZone the scan/reset is free (they have a sticker in the window). Also,

post what area you're in and probably for a beer someone w/ a VAG would do it for you. I've done it for people in the NY area before.

I called the closest auto zone..(Vallejo, California) and they told me that they would charge me the $169 to use it, then refund me my money upon return less $20.
