Default whatever happened to...

the two-piece units that some radar detector co's (whistler, for ex) had, where the receiving unit rested behind the grille, and only a small remote unit was in the cabin? Sure, it'd be tough/impossible to get signals from the rear, but it can be VERY stealthy...I had an 89 mustang LX 5.0 and used the foglight blank (for GT's) to install the remote, and it was invisible even if a cop leaned in my window.....Now, in this world of smaller better electronics, we need a HUGE receiving unit?

Mute button is remote mounted, but I haven't determined ideal location yet.

Default If it indeed IS a real install, I think it's time to figure out a good brake light install....

totally stealth! I think we need to figure out how to get some matching fabric on the brake light cover, and put the detector in there, making sure the antennas are exposed (stealthily), snake the wiring through the carpet and up to the steering wheel like it's installed there. Then again, I think an install like that would overshoot the cost of the already-steep K40, which is about as stealthy as you can get. The mute button would be an issue, but I could imagine making a cutout in that tinted plastic so the mute button is exposed. That would be some serious stealth action.

Default Here are the construction details:

I machined the housing from a solid piece of black ABS. The outside surface was sandblasted, and then sprayed with clear acrylic. This gives it a perfect "factory" look.
The lens is acrylic with window tint applied to the back side.

I removed the PCB from the supplied remote housing. To reduce size, I removed the jack and soldered the wires directly to the board. I wanted the mute button remote from the display (don't want to reach around steering wheel) so the two white wires connect to the traces for the mute switch. I will mount a switch later for the mute function. Any location suggestions are welcome.

I minimized the size of the display bezel by sanding and cutting.

I machined the steering wheel shroud with a milling machine to achieve an ideal fit. The two holes are for attaching the simple fixture which holds it while machining.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/10011/v1_6.jpg">
Here's everything installed into the housing. I used hi-temp hot melt glue.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/10011/v1_7.jpg">
And finally, the housing installed into the steering wheel shroud. The shroud snaps back in to the car normally.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/10011/v1_8.jpg">
And that's it! Took a lot of time, but I'm very satisfied.
