So I tried searching for this, but my google-fu is too weak. Is there a planned difference between the 2017 S7 and 2018 S7 interior/MMI? Am I going to miss some crazy tech upgrade by buying an S7 in the next year?
Too soon to know what the MY2018 configurations will be. Chances are the 2018 C7 will have the full MIB2 MMI that the 2017 B9 and Q7MKII have now.
Really think they will add the virtual cockpit with C7 (or C7.6)? Seems more likely that new MMI will come with the C8 as I don't think they'll go through upgrading all that when the C8 is right around the corner...

You may be right. Like I said it's too soon to know exactly what Audi is planning. It's not even certain when the C8 will be released in NA. I haven't seen release info for the 2017 C7 yet which should have been available by now if Audi followed their usual early summer release schedule. It's rumored that the 2017 C8 will be released in Europe in the Spring of 2017. Audi could decide to forgo a 2017 C7, extend the life of the 2016 C7 and release a 2017 C8 in the U.S. at about the same time next summer. With the virtual cockpit of course.

Agreed. I don't see an upgraded MMI until the C8 for MY19 (likely in the showrooms sometime in CY18). But to assuage your fears, I drove a new Q7 as a service loaner for a couple of days. It did not have the optional VC but otherwise, the changes in the next-gen MMI were (disappointingly) small. I played around with it quite a bit and only noticed two small enhancements: the DIS display showed the same sort of detailed music info that you can show in the main center display; also, when on a telephone call but not displaying the telephone screen in the center display, a nice pop-up box comes up in the center display that allows you to mute or hang-up. That was it!

Audi aren't that adaptable. C7 is an 8 year platform, C8 has always been due late 2018 (in Germany) in A7 form, and I can't see any way they could bring it forward by more than a year. Next year they release the D5, which will provide a lot of insight as to what will come with the C8. They are also working on the new Q5, which is a very important global vehicle for them, as the world continues to go SUV mad. The C8 is last cab off the MLB Evo rank.
I can't see them putting the Virtual Cockpit in a C7, and out of all Audi's vehicles, that is the one that least "needs" VC.
According to this article (and others) the A6 C8 could arrive as early as a MY2017 in Europe with the A7 following a year later. But all of this is conjecture until Audi makes their official announcements.
