Winter Tire Question.
You don't want any margin for error in the winter ice/snow
The general consensus is to use the smallest wheel that will clear the brakes and use a narrower tire for winter tires. The smaller wheel gives you more tire choices at a lower cost. The narrow tire is said to cut through the snow down to the hard pack but it is less important when traveling on mostly plowed roads.
another potential view is that larger diameter rubber can provide a bit more cushion to protect rims against rougher winter pavement with similar impact to speedo/mpg calcs.
