Default New 2.0T Engine reliability

Hi,

I'm about to buy a Q7 for my wife, deciding between 3.0 and 2.0. The power of 2.0T engine is enough for what she's using it for, the only concern would be the engine reliability, we used to have bad experience with the 2.0T engines in our 2011 A4 (burning oil, not a lot, but the oil light come up every 5000 miles).

It seems that the new Q7 2.0T engine is the same one as in 2017 A4, is the oil consumption issue fixed in the latest 2.0T engines? While the 2.0T is new for Q7, I guess it has been selling with the A4 for a couple years already? Have anybody heard reliability issues with the 2.0T engine?

If reliability is not a problem for the 2.0T engine, we might go with the 2.0T engine, it's enough for us, and it saves us some money that I can use it for our second car (we are going to replace the old 2011 A4 with something newer).

Thanks for your suggestion!

I've had my 2017 A4 for about 9 months now and so far the engine hasn't had any oil consumption issues and I haven't read of anyone having those issues either. My car has been amazing and really no issues with the engine or anything really.

There is a big difference in engine load between the Q7 and the A4. The 2.0 is at its limit and the 3.0 is operating with reserve. That has to affect oil consumption and reliability but it also depends on how long you anticipate keeping the car.

When we looked into getting our Q7, we first looked at the 2.0t. Didn't test drive one, but when we test drove the new XC90 with the 2.0 4 cylinder, the 4 cylinder just didn't suit the car. We test drove the 3.0t Q7 and fell in love. The 3.0t engine is perfect for the Q7, providing the right amount of horsepower. Today we had to quickly pass someone and with not even 1/2 throttle, we passed them with ease. I think it would be a different story with the 2.0t. The 3.0t engine is extremely smooth and quiet. It doesn't need to work hard to get you going. I have driven/driven in tons of cars with 4 cylinders and they work great for most cars, but there is a size where they just don't work that well. (IMO) 4 cylinder engines work great for all sizes of cars up to big, 3 row SUV like the Q7 and XC90. If you can afford the 3.0t, go for it. You will have 0 regrets. If it's out of your budget, go for a CPO 3.0t. I think it's 100% worth it.

Can't really compare the XC90's 4 cylinder. It has a supercharger and a turbocharger.

As for the 3.0T. We love it.. it is so smooth, refined, and powerful! Plus I would imagine a lot quieter then the 2.0T.

2.0T XC90 felt not powerful enough for OP; likely it was not the super and turbocharged one then, but the 250hp one (2 less than 2.0T Q7). The 2.0T Q7 isn't sluggish by any means, especially in Dynamic.

If you're just "deciding" between the 3.0 & the 2.0 your decision shouldn't be too difficult. The 3.0 wins hands down.
If you're looking to save money on the MSRP, then Go 2.0 because the gas savings is not much different between both.

If you are a DIY maintenance guy, then the 2.0L is very simple for filter, spark plug changes etc. , lot of space in there with 2.0L, easy and less expensive to maintain than V6 i think. Just pop off the engine cover, all is there, up top. 2 cents worth, why I went with 2.0L, really liking it.

Thanks everyone for your input. We decided to go with a 2.0 after test driving 3.0 and 2.0, and also XC90's 2.0.

The Q7's 2.0T is much much much quieter than XC90's 2.0T (way too lound).

The power of 2.0T is enough for what we drive. After driving the 2.0T the first thing I did was go back and see if it was actually a 2.0T, because I don't feel too much difference driving both, the 2.0T is very quiet and powerful.

Already got it for a week now, pretty happy with it. Saved a lot which we will use to get another compact sedan in a year when the family grows and we need a second car.

Congratulations. I don't think that you can go wrong with either the 2.0 or the 3.0. I ended up getting the 3.0 because I had great luck with it in my 2014 S5 but the 2.0 is adequate for the job. Good luck shopping for your next car.
