UK: Help: A5 2010 2.0 TFSI Chasing down an EPC Light
Hi and welcome to my thread.
I apologise now for the length of the post (but I hope it shows I’ve been using pointers off here before just asking for help). If you make it to the end.... you might be the hero I'm looking for!
Ive been reading this site for a while now and taken some guidance, but after a series of attempts to resolve my issue... I'm stumped. Recently purchased my 2010 A5 2.0 TFSI 100K Miles - Has a warranty from my car seller extended to 15 months. (14/13 months left)
Before purchase
The car had a check engine light on. (turned out to be P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor - Circuit Range/Performance Bank1/Single Sensor) Car seller agreed to have the car fixed and it was sent to independent Audi specialist to have the work carried out. Seller advised that Independent replaced the camshaft position sensor, which did not correct the fault and then replaced the manifold, which appeared to have corrected the fault. MOT completed and car returned to sellers dealership. Check engine light returned on way back to sellers dealership. Seller advised me and I agreed with dealer that I would run the car over the weekend and see if I was happy, if I was, he would take it back to independent garage and have the work done. When collecting the car, after a few hundred meters, the car began; • really rough idling (shaking)• misfiring extensively;• smell of unburnt petrol;• EPC light coming on while car under load;• loud running (sounded like turbo whine)• check engine light started flashing; I pulled off road where safe and looked under the bonnet. The sound reminded me of a loose HT cap off my motocross bike, (don’t ask what made me think of that). So I removed the plastic engine cover to see if I could visibly notice a loose coil pack/Spark Plug etc. I noted that the pipe to the right of the coil packs On top of the manifold was not connected. (presuming vac pipe).
See attached picture (circled in red);
It appears that this was loose when collected from independent and came away when I left seller dealership. I pushed the pipe back onto its connector and it clicked into place. I started the car and the rough idle was almost totally gone. (There are occasions where it feels like the engine skiped but aside from that, the running of the engine was now almost perfect. I took it for a test drive and the only remaining concern was the following; (this remains the fault to date) When accelerating from low revs and under load, as the car passes through 1,000 – 2,000 rpm, at around 1,500 rpm it will misfire and jerk once. The EPC light will trigger but only for 1 second and as the acceleration continues the car performs perfectly with no sign of any issue. The issue is most prominent in traffic or town driving, with constant stop start driving.
Action taken so far
The car, while driving it over that weekend, ran well and did not appear to have the misfire issue when I first set off. The Check engine light actually cleared, but once the car was warm and reached its operating temp of 90 degrees the 1,500 rpm misfire returned and the EPC light triggered for a second, putting the check engine light back on. I connected my OBD2 (Torque) to the car and checked for fault codes. It provided me with P0341 – Powertrain Camshaft Position Sensor ”A” Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor). I cleared the fault off the ECU, and drove the car ensuring that I did not come through 1,500 rpm under load, (setting off in 1st at 2,000 rpm). The EPC light and misfire does not happen when this is done. I rescanned the ECU, and no fault code was present. I reached traffic and the misfire occurred, accompanied by the EPC light for 1 second. I pulled over immediately after the EPC light and misfire without triggering it again and rescanned the ECU. Fault code P0341 - Powertrain Camshaft Position Sensor ”A” was now a pending “yellow” fault. The check engine light had not returned, however it is my understanding that with pending faults, the ECU will wait until the issue reoccurs a set number of times in a specific cycle before triggering the check engine light.
Coil Packs and Spark Plugs
Following posts on here, I had my seller provide/fit four brand new coil packs and spark plugs into the car and whilst noted improved performance, once the engine reaches temperature (90 degrees) the 1,500 rpm misfire and EPC light for one second returned, the issue does not occur until the engine reaches temperature.
Timing Chain Replaced
As this did not fix the issue, under warranty returned the car to the Independant who changed the timing chain for a new one. What a difference in the car, feels brand new. The engine is so quiet compared to before, so I’m satisfied that the chain was probably stretched. Changing the chain has cured the misfire/lurch issue however.... the EPC light still flashes on for 1 second as I go through 1,500 rpm under load. So in short.... everything appears to be fixed. However when the EPC light triggers even just for a second, it registers P0341 Powertrain Camshaft Position Sensor ”A” Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor) again as a pending fault.
In summary I have;
changed all four coil packs and plugs;
cam position sensor changed;
timing chain replaced:
But despite fixing nearly everything and feeling fixed. I still get this EPC light flash and P0341..... Can anyone out there help?

Updated: Cam Sensor, Crank Sensor and Cam Adjustor all replaced. Still getting the EPC light 1 second flash, P0341 code and sadly a slight lurch/misfire.
Wondering it anyone has any ideas. Throttle Body? ECU?
Thanks

In case it may help the next person, I had this exact problem with a car I picked up off of Craigslist. After the car would warm up, the EPC light would flash on and off at 1500 RPMs (P0341). It would then ran sluggish up until 1500 RPMs, and over it would smooth out and run perfectly. The timing was dead on, as the prior owner had just paid a shop for a new timing kit installed hoping to fix it, and yet still had the code. It turned out to be the cam adjuster. I happened to have 3 intake cams, and the one setting off the code was slightly off from the other two. Once I swapped the cam, code gone.

Replace all 4 spark plugs. Cheap and easy to do. While you are at it... check the plug gap and adjust accordingly. Ask me how I know. I had a dealer replace all 4 plugs once and the car drove like $#IT on the way home...
