Pressure test results...
Just pressure tested the intake, no major hose issues I think, there was a very slight hiss from deep in the engine bay, sounded like it was coming from around the bellhousing, but possibly the throttle plate leakby. The other thing that I am worried about is the path to the engine oil sump - I pray this is normal! There was a significant amount of gurgling and pressure built up pretty fast if I put my thumb over the PCV valve. How does it get in there and is that normal?

Pressure will leak past the throttle body
and escape through the oil sump (bubbling) and through the PCV valve. All of that is normal. You just want to make sure you have no leaking from the pressurized portion of the intake system before the throttle body.

And capped the y-pipe side, right?
Pressure leaks past the throttle body and into the manifold. The PCV system is connected to the back of the manifold so some of the pressure in the manifold leaks out the PCV valve (and some through the oil sump).

Yep - ok you have quelled my fears thanks! Still have
no idea what is wrong though. I want my VAG-COM <<yesterday>> I think it is boiling down to me being in limp mode for some reason. Thanks guys!
