<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/44705/picture_002.jpg"></center><p>
just picked up a used set of H&amp;R coilovers
every shocks looked fine except one rear
all three are oil free and bone dry
this one side rear seems to have a leak at the seal where the metal rod inserts into the cylinder
please see pics
thanks for any comments

Default Looks fine.

A little oil around the top is okay. If the shock body is covered in oil, then it's gone.

Default i've pushed it down with my body weight

wet one had less resistance as the rod went into the cylinder
dry one had more resistance
isn't that what shocks/dampers supposed to do - to create resistance so it dampens the vertical bouncing??
if it loses that tightness, it isn't blown??

thanks

hard to tell that way. you'd have to get them on a shock dyno to know fer sure.

Default some general rules...

Shocks have a nitrogen gas charge in them. Usually when the seal goes, the pressure pushes the oil out through it until the charge is lost. So if you can push it down and it stays down, it's shot. If it is weeping oil it may be on the way. The pics dont show much. Why the shock has lost its charge, the oil gets air mixed in w/ it, changing the viscosity and you loose some damping. Eventually you pump all of the oil out and you get some lovely tire wear patterns and of course a very nice ride

Default Those are H&R's

they're not charged with anything other than good 'ole fashion air bubbles in the oil.
