So I finally saw it happen....
This morning I am filling up my car at an Exxon station. At the same pump, but on the other side there is a mk4 VW Jetta. I'm about half way filled, and the owner comes out of the station with a coffee in his hand. He gets into his car, starts it up, rolls down all windows (it was a chilly 45F), and starts to pump the music (rock). He begins to pull away and then *WHAM* the gas nozzle comes flying out of his gas tank, smacks back against the pump with a loud *THUD*. I guess it managed to directly strike the area where you return the nozzle to (cradle) because that whole section fell off of the pump! I guess he was at an angle such that there wasn't enough force for the hose to break away at that junction as it stayed connected throughout. The guy gets out and tries to put the cradle back into the pump, but can't quite manage. Meanwhile I've finished up my pumping, thankful that thing didn't whip around and hit me or my car. As I get in to leave, I see the gas station attendant has come out and is also trying to get the cradle back in.
While he didn't successfully break away the hose from the pump, it was the first time I saw someone "try" ;-)
